With the foreseeable end of operation of the International Space Station ISS, further distant targets like Moon and Mars come into the focus of science. For a long time presence of humans at such places, new carrier rockets and especially technologies for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) and recycling of in-situ materials becomes prerequisite. In combination with additive manufacturing (3D printing), parts and tools as well as large structures such as habitats can be realized. The development and testing of these technologies is the focus of the innovation alliance 3D4Space which started in May 2017 under the direction of the Institute for Space Systems (IRAS).
